Thiers & Surroundings

What to do in Thiers and Auvergne? Between Wild Nature and Exceptional Craftsmanship

Staying at Maison Maubert means enjoying a central location to explore the treasures of the Puy-de-Dôme. From the majesty of the volcanoes to the vibrant industrial heritage, Auvergne offers an inexhaustible playground.

A Unique Experience: Craft Your Own “Le Thiers®” Knife

Thanks to our proximity to the legendary Vallée des Usines, we are proud to recommend a total immersion at our neighbor’s workshop, the Fontenille Pataud manufacture (fine cutlery makers since 1929).

  • Become a Cutler for a Day: Take part in a 4-hour workshop to fully craft your own “Le Thiers®” folding knife. Guided by an artisan, you will discover ancestral techniques: filework (guillochage), adjusting, assembly, shaping, and polishing.
  • Multi-sensory Visit: If you prefer a shorter discovery, dive into the heart of the workshop for a one-hour tour. Touch noble materials (olive wood, horn, Damascus steel), listen to the sound of the grinding wheels, and try your hand at decorative filework.
  • Practical Info: Workshops available year-round (by reservation), for ages 12 and up. An unforgettable souvenir to take home with you!

Thiers: Immersion in the Medieval and Industrial City

From Maison Maubert, history is just a walk away:

  • The Vallée des Usines: A spectacular site where nature reclaims its rights over ancient hydraulic factories. Don’t miss the Creux de l’Enfer, a must-see contemporary art center.
  • The Cutlery Museum: A fascinating dive into the traditions and expertise that have made our city world-famous.
  • The Historic Center: Wander through medieval streets and admire the authentic charm of the half-timbered houses.

Exploring the Livradois-Forez Park and the Chaîne des Puys

Maison Maubert is your ideal base camp for the great outdoors:

  • Livradois-Forez Regional Natural Park: Right at our doorstep, enjoy endless hikes through dense forests and high mountain pastures (hautes chaumes).
  • The Chaîne des Puys (UNESCO): Just 45 minutes away, climb the Puy de Dôme for a unique panorama of 80 dormant volcanoes.
  • Vichy & Clermont-Ferrand: Between the UNESCO-listed spa town of Vichy and urban dynamism (the Michelin Adventure), round off your stay with a touch of culture or relaxation.
